In a crowd, William is often quiet. In fact you would easily imagine that he is shy. Put him one-on-one and he has plenty to say, but is first and foremost a good listener.

William as Song Director   As the music director of the Las Colinas Seventh-day Adventist Church, William leads out in all areas the church's music ministry. He is often heard as a soloist during the divine worship hour, and he is a welcomed singer for Personal Ministries visits to area nursing homes. His rendition of The Old Rugged Cross has brought joy to many.

Married to Emmeline Lescouflair Nelson, the Nelsons live in Lewisville Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Emmeline is a psychiatrist working at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Moving here from Rochester New York, we are glad they are here. William from Jamaica, Emmeline from Haiti, I think they take better to the Dallas climate.

William can often be seen sporting a black hat. Added to his towering frame, he will easily stand out in a crowd. As a clothing designer, he has available unique stylish clothes. I dare you to find William in a traditional tie.

As a musician and writer, William covers primarily religious topics. Please browse through his articles, poems and take advantage of his free downloadable music.

The one question that everyone will ask is "Why is William called The Forestman?" Why indeed!

Why "Forestman?"

People often asked me to tell them the story behind this lyric. I was in a park by the beach. Picture yourself taking a stroll down to the beach after the sun was set and only the moon and stars lighting your path. The place almost deserted; except for a few lovers who were lying in the sand as the waves occasionally wiggled its self between their feet. Well this is the story. While living at Harbour View, in St Andrews Jamaica, I used to take regular evening strolls, crossing the carriage way and down to the beach. I normally do this whenever the walls of house just cannot hold me anymore, and I need a place where I can escape to where I can feel free. There, amongst the trees in the park and the sound of the waves, my thoughts were free to roam wherever it chooses.

I have written many lyrics while sitting at that beach. This night was different though, with my guitar in my hand, I climbed one of the trees in the park and took a comfortable seat. In trees close by I could hear birds making ruffling sounds. They are probably wondering what is this man doing in our house. At that moment I felt as free as a bird and I wished in my heart that that place were my permanent home. I felt that my place was amongst the trees, the birds and water, a man of the forest! Thus the name was born, "Forestman". That was when I wrote the lyric, "Peace is in the valley."

William Layton Nelson

Biography

William Layton Nelson was born on March 3 1945, in a little village in St James Jamaica, called Providence.

As a lad in Jamaica, I bounced back and forth between three different schools inconsistently over a number of years. At the age of thirteen I became a tailoring apprentice with my father. Between the age of 15 and 16, I began writing poems and composing lyrics.

From the early 70s until 78, I performed with the group "The Pleiades." We made an album, "Thunder and Lightning" with some of the lyrics that I wrote.

With delight I now work full time with the musical gift the Lord has given to me. If by doing so I am able to make one person happy, then I know for sure that I am not working in vain. I will follow my dreams, and I know that the Lord will make a way for me somehow.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27: 1. Even though it is very challenging at time, nevertheless I strive to please Him and my fellowmen; there is an abundance of joy in doing so.

Note: I am not claiming to be a country music singer, which is the number one kind of music in my book. At the age of five, I fell in love with country music. Maybe some day I will be able to sing the way those country singers do, but for now I will just tag along. Be assured though that there is a story behind each of these lyrics.
